    Default Routers

I have been with my current ISP for over three years and only had a few minor problems. But for the last two weeks my internet has been cutting off at night. The problem is easily solved by turning my router off for a minute then turning it back on. Someone told me i should buy a new router for two reasons. 1.All ISP's provide a very basic cheap router that is just about capable of doing the job. 2.They like people to use their router because they can track everything you do. Is there any truth in this and if i can get a better connection by buying a router which one is the best? I have a home network which involves two desktops, two laptops and a Nexus 7, although it is very rare that more than three of them are on at the same time.

Who is the ISP and what is the make and model of the router?

I have a ISP router because it is expensive and also, contains a phone modem

Caveat for ISP routers, are you usually rent them from the ISP....Pros...but the maintenance is free

If you buy a router you do not pay a rental fee....but you are responsible for the maintenance too

This is a general statement....check with your ISP

BTW: Again, check with the ISP....most will only allow certain makes and models....even if you buy one
(again that is my case with my ISP...you need to ask your ISP)

My ISP is Sky. The router is Netgear. I'm not sure about the model.

Netgear is a good company....having Sky replace it is an easy fix

I had a router problem....it kept dropping my network printer (cat 5 Ethernet connection)

My ISP gave me a new router upgrade and all is well now (free of charge)

OK I will e-mail Sky and ask for a replacement. Phoning them is a waste of time. They use call centres staffed by people who can hardly speak English and have no idea how to fix the problem.

Yep...sorry about that ....I have had British friends tell me sad stories about Sky

I have had no personal experience with Sky...I believe it is a monopoly in London...not sure

Thanks. They don't have a monopoly but they are one of the big three. BT and Virgin are the others. There are a lot of smaller ones but they have some horrendous reviews.
