Default Having problems with my sound.

Hello, so I've had some problems with my computer sound for a while now and I'm not sure but it maybe because of the SP3 update that I did on my computer fairly recently (I guess I'm not the only one because there were many other people with the same problem when I tried to look for a solution). After my sound stops working I either reboot my computer which fixes it only to stop working again or re-install the Dell Audio driver update which also temporarily fixes it. I've also tried to fix the problems with Microsoft's Fix It tool but I get more errors from it saying I need updates which provide even more errors.

Also, the error that I get when I try to play the the sounds from the Sounds and Audio Devices control panel is "Windows cannot play the %SystemRoot%\media\Windows XP Error.wav file. It may be damaged or may not be a valid sound file. Replace the file and try again." I don't get this error when I reboot my computer or re-install the Dell Audio driver.

    I have Windows XP, SP3
Dell Dimension DM051, 1GB RAM (I know, I need to add more)
Hard Disk 28.3GB used and 115 GB free.

    Hi raf1314,

On many occasions Windows Updates on XP will replace drivers that don't work.

Click on Start and type devmgmt.msc into your Run box. This will bring up the Device Manager. In the Device Manager look for and click on the arrow to the left of your Sound/Audio devices to expand the list. Right click and choose Properties > Driver tab. Click on Roll Back Driver.

If that doesn't help. you may have to visit Dell to reinstall the correct, up to date drivers for the Sound/Audio devices. Let us know the name of the devices and we can help you find the ones you need if you have any trouble.

The following link might help in finding those drivers:

    Dell > Support > Drivers & Downloads

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!

If you think you might be infected with malware or have recently cleansed your computer of malware without the help of an expert, please read and follow the instructions in How to Start Removing Viruses and Spyware from your Computer. This can alleviate time consumed in trouble shooting your current computer problems.

If your problem is solved, here's how to say thanks!

If I may add to Donna's excellent advice,
On many occasions Windows Updates on XP will replace drivers that don't work.
I make it a policy not to update 3rd party drivers from MS Update (usually in the Hardware portion of the update panel). With drivers it is always best to update from the manufacture of the hardware as they have the latest fixes for their product. With computers such as Dell, HP, Toshiba etc go for the drivers of your computer manufacturer as their hardware is specifically designed for their computers.

    Hope this helps.

Hi Donna, I went through your steps and rolled back the driver and so far my sound is currently working but before i did the roll back it was working fine so I might have to wait before I actually know if the roll back worked.

Canuck The driver that I rolled back is actually the update that I downloaded from Dell, which is SIGMATEL-Driver 5.10.0.4823, A05 and installed it when my sound kept going off (which was about 1 week ago) but it never actually resolved the issue since I still had the problem today some hours ago. Should I also download all the other drivers as well? I only downloaded the Audio driver, don't know if downloading all the other drivers might help the audio problem.

I'm still loosing my audio even after re-installing the driver from Dell and rolling it back... I don't lose the audio permanently since I can reboot my PC and get back the audio but then after some time it stops working.

    Hi raf1314,

No, that's fine. C:\Program Files\ is the correct destination for the file to install to. HJT this will create the file path of C:\Program Files\TrendMicro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe once it is installed within that folder.

Edit: Ooops! Hi Joe. Didn't see you on.....LOL!
