    Unhappy XP Loading problem

Hi,Please can anyone help me, i was trying to re-install my xp on my laptop, i put the dell operating cd in but found that my product key was too rubbed to read it (it is xp home ) so i tried my product key from my old broken base unit but it would not accept it so i tried my xp pro cd and key it went as far as windows set up then kept coming up with "cannot load this file and that went on and on, so i tried my xp home again this time it kept coming up with "windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt " the file name is <windows root>\system 32\hal.dll, "please re-install a copy of the above file" but i don`t know where to look or to do with it, i am sorry i have made a very hash up of this so i would be grateful for any help/advice that you may be able to give. lucy
