    Default Formatting a hard drive...help?

WP_20151201_007.jpgWP_20151201_008.jpgPlease can you advise? I'm trying to format a hard drive, I understand a hard drive cannot be formatted whilst it is in use, so I've replaced the hard drive, and the spare hard drive that I have now taken out, I want to format. Previously I would have had no problem with this, but technology, and the hard drive design has changed somewhat & now I'm not sure. I've attached some pictures in the hope that you could direct me? The two connections on the motherboard, 'Sata' I believe (?), one is yellow & one is white (hopefully you can make it out)? The red cable (pictured), can this be connected to either yellow or white or does it have to be a specific one? Also, the other connections (pictured), would these connect straight to the hard drive? The hard drive by the way is a 'Sata' hard drive, 500GB. Can't you just tell I'm a complete idiot & an armature!!! Please can you advise? WP_20151201_002.jpgWP_20151201_003.jpgWP_20151201_004.jpg
