    Default AVAST free, Meltdown, Spectre

    Hi everyone.

    My brain is also going into meltdown.

    I am on W7 and use AVAST free AV, program version 17.9.2322, engine & definitions version 180110-0. The update tells me that these are the latest versions.

    I understand that I should d/l a MS patch for the Meltdown/Spectre issue but ONLY if my AV has been updated to include the necessary MS acceptance regkey. Otherwise I could get a BSOD.

    My problem is that I cannot be certain (a) whether my AV has the MS regkey installed and (b) exactly which fix I should d/l from MS for this issue.

    I've spent so much time reading that I am well confused with all the contradictory "advice" out there.

    Can anyone give me a simple answer to both (a) and (b) above?

    If so I would be most grateful.

    Many thanks.

    Hello,

    Other then that.

    It seems Avast is compatible and should have the reg key.

    Some information here.

    Thanks

    Thanks matey. Helped a lot. It's morning here and my mind is much clearer than it was yesteday!

    Seems my Avast "free" version/W7 combination is updated.

    Went into regedit and found this key present on my system .....

    Key="HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" Subkey="SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\QualityCompat" Value="cadca5fe-87d3-4b96-b7fb-a231484277cc" Type="REG_DWORD”
    Data="0x00000000”

    As it's present I should be OK to d/l MS updates and fixes.

    Cheers.

    According to this list of security programs, Avast has been updated.

    Yes, I saw that elsewhere on the web but I wondered if it was only directed at the "paid for" version not the "free" one that I use. Unlikely, I know, that they would update one but not the other but I needed to be sure. Part of my confusion yesterday.

    Following the links on that list take you to Avast forums where an Avast team member reports "all versions" from Avast 8 and later are good to go.
