Default SD Card Reader - Dell Inspiron 17 5000 series

It will not read any card I put in it. I hear the tone that I have plugged something in, I can click on safely removing it, but have nothing when I click on the reader drive nor does anything pop up with what I want to do with the files on it when I plug any card I have in.

I have gone to Dell's website - used their trouble assist to read the system whereby it says nothing is wrong. I downloaded the latest card reader driver, re-booted after installing and still nothing.

    Is this a hardware failure?

    Kathy

Try running the following from a Elevated Command Prompt, one at a time:

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

    SFC /scannow

You can copy the lines above 1 at a time right into the black Command Prompt window

Using System File Checker in Windows 10

In the search box on the taskbar, enter Command Prompt. Press and hold (or right-click) Command Prompt (Desktop app) from the search results and select Run as administrator.
    Enter DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth (note the space before each "/"). ...
Enter sfc /scannow (note the space between "sfc" and "/").

Lets see if that helps any.

Got everything entered and run. Still will not read the cards. You hear the noise that something has been plugged in but, when I click on the SD card from file explorer it tells me to install an SD card
