    After using Partition Magic 7.0 , on restart of computer the hardrive goes as far as starting win98 then it comes up type the name of the command interpretor (e.g., C:WINDOWSCOMMAND.COM)

    Sounds like your system is trying to boot up into the partition that does not have the system files on it.
    The default is drive C:
    Boot up with a windows startup disk at at the prompt type "sys c:" (without the quotes)

    thanks for your advice but unfortunately it did not work.

    If the sys command faled to fix the problem
    reformat and create the partitions using fdisk.
    Also do a clean installation of win 98.

    Whoozhe sorry to be a pest but I've done all those thing already...any other suggestions or am I going to have to pay out on a new hardrive.. short on money right now.

    Try using the rescue disks that you made ( hopefully ) during the install.

    Did you delete all existing partitions using fdisk then create a new primary partition and format to make a new filling like fat32 or fat16? are you using windows 98 or 98 second edition?
