when i turn on my computer to boot up, i get a message that the line is busy or the number doesn't answer. if i unplug the jackfrom the back of the CPU that goes to the wall telephone jack, and then plug it back in, i have to hurry and reboot quickly
or it goes busy again. then after surfing the internet for about 2 hours, the computer freezes up (clicking on anything doesn't work), and i have to reboot again.
any suggestions as to what i can do?

There is either something else using the line, the modem is set incorrectly of worse still you may have a nasty bit of software that dials a 1900 number auroomatically.
Download and istall adaware from http://www.lavasoftusa.com
Contact you phone company and check you bill.
If there are a number of unaccountable calls (long distance) seek their advice on how to fix it.
This will require removing the entire dial up network software and reinstalling it.
