I'm confused. Some experts say a dial-up user definitely needs a firewall such as ZoneAlarm, BlackIce, etc. and others say it is not a good idea because it slows down a dial-up user's Internet session too much.

    Ideas?

i dont believe it wwould slow you down all to much, but sense ZoneAlarm and BlackIce defender are free programs ( i think they are both free ) it wont hurt to try

It is nice to know that your system is protected from potential intruders.
My system is scanned 50 times a day by bored idiots looking for some way of accessing.
Firewalls such as Zone Alarm, block these attempts.

I would say go for it.

I have had dial up systems with & without a firewall and have noticed no difference in speed between the two, and thats using things like instant messengers etc.
