I recently installed a new cdrw, 3.5 floppy and 128 megs of ram into a compaq running windows 98. The computer is now searching for data for a very long time. When the data is finally retrieved it is very jumpy. I have tried different cdrw settings such as master, slave, and even used a secondary ide port. Thanks for any help.

Compaq systems, well mst of them, are not your normal run of the mill computers. They tend to use propietry components.
Check with compaq to see what memory upgrades they recommend. The dame goes for CD drives and virtually any hardware.
The same applies to HP machine.
    Most are not upgradable.
