This has me really confused! I first thought it was the mouse but , then I plugged another one in & it did the same thing. The left button doesn't work & if I try to change the settings on the right button to use to the same as the left then it doesn't work either. I have to sit & hold down the button or keep clicking for it to open anything. Any advice on whats wrong? Could it be the port in the comp? Would it work if I got a new USB port mouse & used the usb port instead of the serial port or maybe a touch pad. Thanks.

A USB mouse will work better.
As for your problem it could be the software/driver that is corrupt or the actual port may be damaged.
Download and install the latest drivers
