Every time i put a cd in my cd rom drive in my notebook - the laptop recognizes that there is a cd rom drive but won't read any of the info. I tried to put a cd cleaner but it won't read that either. Can my laser be dammaged - is this fixable?

It may be that the alignment in the drive is out. If so it is cheaper to replace than repair.
Before this you can try the following:
    Stop autoplay.
Uninstall the drive and let windows reinstall it during bootup.
How to do this depends on the operating system you use.

I'm on Windows 98 - gave it a shot, reinstalled cdrom, all was recognized, I can eject from Win98 but when i put a DATA cd in, it reads 10 music tracks instead and starts the cdplayer automatically.
