    Default CWShredder ends it's life

Unfortunately the main tool for identifying and ridding a system of Browser hijackers will no longer be updated. The developer of CWShredder, Merijn Bellekom, is beginning classes for a Master's Degree in computer sciences. Unfortunately, he is unable to keep up with his studies while fighting what is essentially a one-man war against the CWS trojan. CWS is continually updated and every new mutation is nastier than ever. At this moment, the only program that can find and remove nearly all variants of CWS is CWShredder.

Merijn has announced that he will discontinue updating CWShredder while he concentrates on his studies. Not to worry though, we have other tools available that will remove CWS, although they require the guidance of someone trained to use them.Hopefully the developers of regular antispyware programs will improve their detection of CWS. No other program will detect or remove as many different variants of CWS as Shredder. Hopefully that will change soon.

Thanks for the tip, whooze. It's a pain. Just what are the alternatives, please? Regards.

    HI whoozhe

Not sure I agree with your statement that Merijn is "fighting what is essentially a one-man war against the CWS trojan."

If you saw how many experts are putting in countless hours every day, to come up with new ways to deal with all these new variants, you'd know what I mean.

Merijn is just one person in a team, and it is the efforts of all involved passing information to Merijn, that help to keep the shredder up to date.

6 months ago the shredder could take out most cws hijackers, but the new variants have become so complex that it has become impossible to incorporate them in the shredder without virtually rewriting the shredder itself.

    Hi galena1

The alternatives are to manually find and delete the hijackers, using third party programs, which vary according to the variant.

Here is a link which shows how to remove the 27 latest variants, trouble is there are variants of the variants, and the removal usually varies depending on the o\s

Most of these cannot be removed by the shredder.

Thanks for the response, Steam. Looks like some of us are going to be on a pretty steep learning curve. It was easy to take CWS, and others, for granted. Regards

Sorry steamwiz. That was not meant to be any reflection on the work done by you or any other contributer but CW Shredder was the main tool used to combat Hijackings and apart from the long process of manually identifying and removing these nasties we are left with no real tool.
The concern is that HJT postings will now increase to the point where forums like this will not be able to cope.
There are already forums that automatically lock HJT logs.

Is it suggested or implied or a forewarning that Help2Go may Lock HJT help; that would be a great pity- considering the site has a terrific
analyst of these logs; people drop in from everywhere to get the help of steamwiz, long may he be'steaming' along. cheers Jim.

Have been trying out BHODemon from http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm
This is a free, no spyware etc. and updated regularly BHO scanner.
The program locates all BHOs and give you the option of disabling or enabling them.
PCWorld, Znet, Ziff Davis and just about every major computer publication are advocating that everyone stop using IE until Microsoft fix the gaping security holes in it. Some are even suggesting trashing Outlook. for the same reasons.
These two applications ar the reason 99% of viruses, trojans and hijackers spread.
Microsoft have release a patch of sorts after they have known about the current HBO problem for 9 months.
