    Default slow computer

I have a Dell Dimension computer running Windows XP. It seems very slow compared to my old Compaq. When I start up, then bring up Windows Task Manager, I have 46 processes running ! Is this normal ? or can I shut down a bunch of those ? Can Anyone help ??

46 is more than I have, but they doesn't mean that is bad. Almost all of mine show 0% usage. How much CPU total usage is it showing ?

    Cheers

It will also help to know how much RAM you have. XP can eat up alot of memory. Was the old Compaq running XP or 98?

    Hi hermitman02,

Here is a site that can help you out with running programs. http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm . I suggest you read everything carefully and then select the 'safe' selection. Hope this helps

I just posted a similar reply on another "slow computer" post ... you can also do these things to help speed up your computer:

-- Delete all temp files (c:\windows\temp\*.tmp)

-- Delete temporary internet files (c:\windows\temporary internet files\*.*)

-- If you use I.E., click on Tools, Internet Options, Delete Files, select "delete all off-line content", click OK

-- Click on Start, Programs, Accessories, Systems Tools, Disk Cleanup

-- Download Diskeeper and defragment your computer

-- Download AdAware, check for updates, run it and remove whatever it finds
