    Default Thingys Running At Start-Up

I've heard about something that can be downloaded which lists all applications, etc., running in the background (and slowing down ones computer). It can tell you which ones you need and which ones to close. Does anyone know what it is and where it can be downloaded? Many thanks in advance!

I don't know of a program that you download, but try this site http://www.blackviper.com/WIN2K/servicecfg.htm . BlackViper is an expert in this area and gives excellent advice. The above URL is for Win 2000, (there is a related page for XP) read & follow his instructions carefully, if you're not into heavy gaming, would suggest you chose the Safe column for your settings.

BlackViper, bless his soul, deal mainly with window services many which can be switched off.
It does not, however, cover other files that may run when you boot up.
you can see what is running by pressing the Ctrl Alt Del keys similtaneuously and look under Processes.

A massive list of every know file that can run can be found at http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php
Just search for each one in your list and determine if you do or do not want it to run.

Most can be stopped by either from withing the application's preferences or by clicking Start > Run and typing msconfig. Look under Start up.
other places to look is in the startup folder for each user.
You can fild those folders in C:/Document and Settings/User/Start Menu/Programs/StartUp
