This looks like a Java problem. Try Start>Control Panel>add/Remove Programs and delete any Java files you find. Then go to Java on the net and download the latest release and install Java VM here . Let us know how it goes, if unsuccesful you may consider posting a Hijackthis log after viewing and completing the steps. http://www.help2go.com/postt8026.html .

Suggest you then take a look at the Highjack this option and go through all the steps and post a HJT log. Steamwiz also lives in your time zone and is on site usually between 20:00 hrs and 00:00 hrs GMT.

HI Jack! I'll tag this post for Steamwiz to take a look at (or for that matter any of our members who feel they can help out) and see what he/they can come up with.

    Hi

rundll32.exe is required to do a lot of things, including open the Control Panel...

rundll32.exe allows you to run a .dll file as though it was an .exe file ... it is also required to run some exe files themselves, so this may also be why hijackthis will not run....

Try to extract a new copy from your XP Cd to c:\windows\system32\

If for some reason you can't do that, try to download one from the net ... you should be able to find it somewhere.

    good luck

    steam

Got to turn in now (midnight) I'm up at the crack of dawn tomorrow.

Hi again Steam (and anyone else who may have any ideas)
I have placed another copy of rundll32.exe in system32 folder to no avail, made absolutely no difference whatsoever.
Seems whatever I want to do I just get the window opening up asking which programme I want to open the application with. Cant acess volume controls or anything in control panel.
When I put my XP cd in the drive it starts, all it will let me do is explore it, if I try to re-install or repair it just does nothing at all.
This has all happened since I received the error log that I posted in my first post in this topic.

    Hi

I've been digging around for an answer to this, quite a few people seen to have got this error, but I can't find a definate answer to it....

I think your best bet is to uninstall java ....

You can do this from add\remove programs in the Control Panel....

Now ... getting into Control Panel... this works on my Win98 ... it may or may not work on XP

This is the command for bringing up Control panel...

    Rundll32.exe shell32,Control_RunDLL

Paste the Bold line into "run" and click OK

It also works if you just put...

control ... try that if the other doesn't work.

You can also run Control.exe to bring up Control panel

    And

    Control.exe Appwiz.cpl

    To bring up add\remove

If you can get into add\remove then uninstall ....

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03 ... as suggested by Canuck

    See if that helps...
