My friends Emachine 500IDX hangs during bootup. Fan turns on and I hear it running, but nothing on the monitor. Amber light in front panel stays on, Like it its stuck on standby. Tried putting in another power supply and same thing happened. Any tips or solutions out there? Any help will be MUCH appreciated.

Onboard video? Or PCI or AGP? Sonds like a video adapter problem, do you have another monitor you can hook up to the computer to rule out the monitor as the problem?

    Here are the Specs:

    Microsoft® Windows® 98 Second Edition
    Intel® Celeron™ 500MHz (w/128KB L2 Cache) PPGA CPU
    64MB SyncDRAM
ATI Rage Pro Turbo 2X AGP with 4MB SGRAM
    Crystal CS4280 3D PCI Audio

I tried a new Power supply, as well as a Vid Card from my other PC (that I know works). I even tried another monitor as well.

Sounds like a faulty power supply as no power is getting beyond it. Not surprising considering Emachines use the cheapest and nastiest components.

Even in standby mode the CPU fan should work. If, as you say, you replace the powe4 supply then the next problem is the motherboard itself.
I suggest you have a technician look at the whole system as there is no real way anyone can determine the exact problem in a forum like this.
