Default My DVDR won't recognise blank DVDs...any ideas why?

    Greetings all!
I have just installed a new Sony DVDR and have discovered that although I can burn CDs fine, it won't see blank DVDs - it reads as 0 bytes used and 0 bytes free?! I am almost certain this is a really simple thing to solve, but I lack the computer knowledge any suggestions folks?
    Cheers, Adam

Check to make sure your DVD writing program is set for DVD and not CD, I know this to be for Nero. If this is the case, remember to switch back when you need a CD written.

Thanks for the suggestion Canuck, however I have now tried that and it still won't work.
I am using Nero and going through the DVD burning wizzard with the setting for dvd but at the last stage the BURN option is not highlighted - as if I didn't have a blank DVD in the drive when I do?

Any other suggestions welcome (apart from smashing the (heck) out of the computer...I already considered that one thanks! ). Cheers Adam.
