    Hi Basementgeek.
the reason i ask this is because i am fed up with xp and would like to
no how good linux is i have a copy lying around and thougt i will give it a
shot the reason i like the sound of linux is because i read in a magazine.
that xp pro set at default with no protection will last 4 minutes on the net
and linux with out protection will last (3 months)
i noticed when runing linux that it can lock down all the files on my pc
i think this is good for security.

    cheers.

You are probably correct, how ever there is plenty of Free protection out there for XP. Naturally if choose not to use it, you will have many many problems.

Pretend for a minute you are the "Bully" in school, like to beat up on people. If you beat up a "little guy" there will not be much to "bragging rights"about this, is there ? If you say that you beat up a "big guy" now you have something to brag about.

Granted at times I think MS start as a Swiss Cheese manufacture, experts in things with holes. However they have things to plug in these holes if you choose too.

I have run XP for about 3 years, yes it has it bugs, but I am happy with it.
With XP you can generally get out of any hole that you dug for yourself.

    Cheers

    Just curious here.
What setup have you been running that made you so fed up with XP?
    Basementgeek makes some good points.
As far as I'm concerned an updated XP O/S with a good firewall, antivirus and anti spyware is fairly hard to beat.
Also if you need advice, it is easier to find someone who knows XP as opposed to Linux.
XP is far from perfect but this applies to any O/S, Microsoft or otherwise.

    HI Guy9663
the problems i get with xp pro and home is some times i get the odd
viruses and ie6 some times gets reconfigurate and some times i seem
to get lots of hackers scaning my pc i have had more hackers scan my pc
than i can count from all around the world i use all the good free software
like spybot adwear agv7 and a good firewall i have got to point where i
am getting mightmare about this i have heard that they is not many.
viruses for linux and is better for security.
i have even went to the extent of useing a ip mask to hide my ip address
from them but this slows things down on my pc.
i have heard that 1.3 people use linux so i guess that the rest use windows
i suppose that the less people that use linux are not somuch at risk from.
    hackers and so on..
plus i like the look of linux.

I belive Linux is more complex to use than Windows so you should be computer literate before you make the change. I'm not saying that your not but just warning you.
There can be some compatability issues with linux aswell, especially if you don't know what your doing.

If it's mainly IE thats giving you problems, try using Mozilla's Firefox instead. Many people here use it, including myself and much prefer it. Not only is it a lot more secure, it's a lot better in the way of features and you may find it to be faster too.

I understand that XP is not perfect, I too had many scepticisms about it but after using it for a while it is quite good, as long as you keep updated.
I'm not exactly sure what your using but I use Zone Alarm Firwall, AVG 7 Free and Firefox and have never had any problems. Try this and see if the situation improves. Spyware Blaster can also be used to prevent spyware from installing itself in the first place.

    Cheers, Dave.

Go to link 1 below and follow all steps. Post results and the real experts who use this site (not me) can tell you about any problems you may have.
If you want to install a fire wall see links 2 or 3.
You already know about the O/S you have. Why learn how to use a new O/S just because you have some problems?
Take the easy way out. Help2Go can show you how!

Re the post I just entered.
Have you installed Service Pack 2? It's free and helps your computer be more secure. Link below for details.
