When trying to install the driver from this site a message came up saying that the modem was the wrong model.

Try scanning your computer with Belarc Advisor to see if it tells your any more info on modem. Available here:

See the link below. Download and run everest home edition. When you have the results check under devices > physical devices. You should see the modem listed. Use that info to make sure you are installing the correct driver. Then go looking for the driver to download.
If that doesn't help scan for new hardware and install the generic driver from the XP database. The driver database on XP is fairly big particularly if you have SP2 installed.
    Any problems come back.

These programs didn't provide any more information about my modem. Guy9663 mentioned installing a generic driver. How do i go about doing this?

Is this modem part of your motherboard or is it a sperate card in a PCI slot?. If it is a separate card, and you feel OK with working inside the computer, you can take the card out and look at it to see if you can see any model numbers or other info. Charlie

The HP Pavilion 6746C came with the "Cheetah" Fax/Data modem installed at the factory. This is a Lucent-based chipset. Please note that a company called Agere aquired the technology for Lucent winmodems a few years ago.

The Lucent/Agere modem drivers can be found at the source here:
