    Default notebook cleanup

    HI,

I just bought a notebook computer from Best Buy, a Toshiba Satellite s355. The salesman said that right out of the box, there are a lot of programs running that will slow down the computer and use up battery life. Best Buy offers a service for $30 that will clean up the computer and save 30% on battery life, and suggested I do it before I even leave the store. Is this an unnecessary add on? And if not, will my computer be just as clean if I post a Hijack this log on Help2go?

    Thanks for your help,

    mobster82

Is this a new machine?I'm assuming so as it is 'just out of the box'. If so, the salesman/jerk is trying to screw more dosh out of you. Yes, there may be unnecessary stuff running at start up, but that is not unusual and can be dealt with if it is an issue. Ahh! the benevolence of sales staff knows no bounds. I would be inclined to refuse their kind offer.Regards.

A HiJack This log will show what is running on start up, I'm sure we can help you make some decisions about what is not needed. I would have told the salesman I was going somewhere else to buy a notebook that wasn't cluttered with junk. Perhaps he would have changed his mind about the $30. I imagine he makes a very hefty commission from the $30. Charlie

    Hi,

There seemed to be a lot of free offers and stuff like that. Here is my Hijackthis log, please let me know what is unnecessary so I can delete it. So far the only software I have put on it are adaware and hijackthis.

I am not the expert with Hijack logs, but there are alot of 04 entries which are the ones that run at start up. Unusual to have that many things running at start up on a new computer. I think I counted 26, I'm running 6 on start up, most have to do with antivirus, firewall, and antispyware. Someone will help you sort it out. Charlie

I think you ought to use the lap top for a while and see how it does.

A lot of these entries pertain to the lap top itself, from Toshiba.
You have a couple related to the Norton, Wireless connection, modem on hold, one that stops XP built CD writer so you other program that you are using to burn CD/DVD does not conflict with XP's. One for SoundMax.

Have a look here for details on things called "START-UP APPLICATIONS
DO YOU REALLY NEED ALL OF THEM?:

    http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm

Unlike Grim, I too have a lot of things loading on start up and really do not have a problem. I have Anti Virus, Firewall, UPS, E mail notifier, spell checker, pop up blocker, weather monitor, Anti spyware, WinPatrol , Skype and Hard Drive Monitor. But I am happy with the PC performance and so I am not concerned.

    Cheers
