    Default computer extremely slow |

I am using a broad band connection and lot of virus keeps coming in. Recently all word files became notpad. I have reloaded the office 2000. Now when I open any file it takes hell of time to open. Every time it shows that "requested virus scan". I have scanned the hard disc and defragmented as well. Can anyone suggest step by step some technique to improve the speed. (e-mail address edited out .. we do not reply by e-mail)

I think the first question is why are you getting so many viruses. Until you protect your PC and not download from questionable sites (I'm not saying you do, but this is one of the main sources of viruses) .. giving you advice may be pointless. Go here . Follow all steps 1 to 5. When you get to 5 you will be creating a Highjackthis log. Copy the log and return to this post, click Post Reply at the bottom of the page and paste the log there. Make mention that you've followed through all the steps so that our experts will know what's been done.

After we know your PC is clear of viruses, we can make further suggestions for better performance.

How long have you had this program Driver_Detective ? Did this slow down start after you loaded this program ?

How much RAM do you have ? HD size and how much free space does it have?

Driver detctive was loaded about a month back. The computer was slow earlier also. May be with this it has further become extremely slow. The computer has a hard disc of 20 GB and partitioned into c, d and e with 8, 8, 4 GB. Windo and other operating programs are in C. It has about 4 GB free space right now. The RAM is 156 , but the computer was running o.k. earlier. If you advise me to remove driver detective, please suggest how to do it as well.

Have you considered adding more RAM? It's amazing what an additional 128 or better will do.
