Default Windows XP Media and AVG

We now have a new PC -

On my old PC if I installed AVG, for example, it appeared to cover the system for all users.

With Windows XP - the AVG seems to need to do it's thing with all 3 users. I installed it under the HP Administrator thinking it would cover it for all. Is there a way to work around this so that it does not need to do the daily scan each time we switch users but once for all users?

Related to this - it tells me my e-mail scanner is not configured. We attempted to activate it but it will NOT activate. I am using outlook express

When I switched PC's I had purchased AVG previously and wanted to re-install on the new PC. I downloaded "FREE"*version first because*I did not have my license number handy.** We are connected to the internet with hi-speed access and I did not want to be unprotected for even a moment. Once I found the license number I*uninstalled and reinstalled the Professional edition, but we have this error.

Not sure what to try next.

So 2 things: help for the e-mail scanner with AVG (how to activate) AND a better understanding for how the XP functioning is with updates for each user, even though we are all using the same stuff.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

First try a repair of AVG. Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs>highlight AVG and click on repair.

Also an answer from AVG's FAQ
If the AVG 7.0 Trial Edition is installed on your computer you donĀ“t have to re-install it if you bought the AVG 7.0 Professional version. You can simply use the Professional Edition license number to activate the product. You can do it this way: AVG -> Information -> Activate AVG
You could also try this in Safe Mode.

Still trying to find info on the sharing problem .. stay tuned as others may have some ideas on this.

Try these and see if anything comes of it. Keep us posted.

Hi Canuck - my message is missing in action. I hope it does not end up posting twice.

Thanks for your wisdom. Let me bring you up to speed with where I am at. I know I did not likely post the clearest request for help. My apologies!

I had already converted the AVG FREE to the Professional edition.

I tried to do the repair, but that option is not available to me, only to uninstall.

Let me know what else I need to tell you so you have a more accurate picture here.

    Thanks!

I did have the same problem with it not scanning the e-mail on a friends PC. I ended up doing a complete uninstall> reboot >and reinstall (this was with the free version). If you haven't done that already, give it a shot. When reinstalling a 'fresh' version make sure to activate the e-mail scan .. it's one of the options as it loads I believe.

A possible solution to scanning other User Accounts .. Open AVG in your Admin Account>Test Center>Tests>Scan selected Area>when there go to My Network Places and see if the other accounts are there, if so check the box. I don't know if this will do just a one shot scan or it will become part of the regular schedule. Perhaps this isn't the way to do it either ...

If this doesn't work, and you have the paid version (Pro), AVG should give you personal assistance on this (perhaps this is only availabe for PRO). If you do find out, I would really appreciate it if you give us the definitive word on it.

Will try these out and post the outcome.

Will follow through with AVG as needed and advise.

Canuck: Info related to problem from AVG -

    Dear Sir/Madam,

    Thank you for your email.

There is problem between AVG Personal email scanner and Fast switch function. The problem is that the AVG Personal Email scanner runs for each user as process. It locks two ports for itself. When there is first user logs in, it locks these ports. After you use fast switch, the process is still runnung for first user locking these ports. Second users process find these ports locked and report it as problem, because it cannot scan emails. For now is neccessary to log out first user before second one is logged in. It will be alleviated after new version of Personal Email Scanner will be released. It will workl as service for all users in one time. The date of release is not known yet.

There is no another problem with fast switch function in AVG program. Of course some setting has to be made for each user separatelly, but updates are one for all of them. That means if one user donwload and apply updates, AVG is updated. Every user has its own basic default tasks and its own setting of his tests.

    **** Best regards,

    **** Mirek Makovec

YES - we use fast switching user function on this PC.
    * Thanks for the tips on the scheduler.
    * I was surprised to find that once I installed AVG under my user name, the
other users also had to do the set up. It is 1 PC - 3 users, 3 set ups? Does
this mean if there is an AVG update all 3 users need to do the update to
    have the whole PC protected?

    RE: e-mail:
    * The scanner which is in use came with the install: "Personal E-mail
    Scanner"
    * The exact wording of the error message is different in 2 places. When the
control center is open, the message on the red e-mail button in the upper
right says: Email scanner is not fully functional.

On the bottom of the Control center, near where the 2 buttons "activate" and
"Profiles" are it says E-mail scanner: Personal E-mail Setting is not
    configured.

We are using Windows XP firewall. We have Spywareblaster and Adaware for
spyware protection. I downloaded the manual to my PC. I am trying to find
which page to locate the firewall /AVG compatibility information at this
    time.

Please advise what we should do to eliminate e-mail problems.

Please advise about the multi user functions with one PC and AVG. What does >each user need to do to assure we are safe?

    Thanks!

    Dear Sir/Madam,

    ...

The Boot Up Scanner test is available only on W9X systems, not on WNT.

Do you use fast user switching function on this pc?
    ...

    Send me following information please:
    1) What program do you use to send/receive emails? Information can be
usually found in the Help menu of this application.
    2) What E-mail scanner plugins have you installed with AVG7?
Run AVG Control Center -> E-mail Scanner component -> Properties button.
You can find this information in the "Installed plugins" combo box.
    3) Also please switch back to AVG Control Center main screen and select
the E-mail Scanner component (one click). Now tell me the exact wording of
error message, that appears on the bottom of this screen.
    4) Are you using any firewall/antispam software on your computer?

If you have a firewall then:
Please visit our website (www.grisoft.com) and go to Downloads ->
Documentation. Please read the Firewall Settings document and review your
firewall settings to ensure 100% compatibility.

    From me to them, originally...
I am noticing a difference with how AVG Pro works with our new PC and
wanted to check to see if this is unique to AVG Pro in our new operating system, or if there is something which can be adjusted in AVG or the OS to streamline operations.

    Background:
Old system Gateway P3 Windows 98
New system HP P4 Windows XP Media
    AVG Professional Edition on Both

Old system - We would start up and AVG would do a fast system scan. With
the exception of updates and full system scans which we would do manually
under any user, if we closed out of one user to another, AVG was not doing anything that we were aware of.

New system - We start up the PC, select a user and AVG initiates a system
scan. Each time we switch to a different user (log off or switch) AVG "start up"
    all over again.

Is the PC fully protected upon startup with the first user? Why does it do
this each time? If someone wants to switch and do a quick check and then log off - we don't want to cancel anything which is vital to thorough, safe,
    operations.

I am a novice, so if there are specific things I can do to fine tune AVG or the OS related to AVG, please advise.

We also seem to get an intermittent alert that the e-mail is not fully
functional. I uninstalled and re-installed last night, because clicking on
activate did not change the status.* When I signed on today, the alert
came up again, but I was able to "activate" it. Shouldn't this stay activated?

    Bug report attached.

Thanks lpmtnmvr. This tells us exactly what we wanted. So I guess the bottom line is to wait for the next version. Really appreciate you getting back to us with the info.

Hope we can help out in the future if needed and feel free to post some tips on other posts too.
