Default Need antivirus software that won't slow down my ancient PC

I don't know how if anyone is in the habit of recommending software, but I have a dilemma. I just wiped clean my old Dell PC made in 1997 because it was obliterated by spyware. I've installed Windows XP now, but before I go online I need to buy some antivirus software. The problem is that I want to minimize the drag that the av software will have on my very old machine. Any ideas of what would be effective without slowing my computer down to a snail's pace?

There's already some security in place: I have Zone Alarm right now, and I was thinking of downloading the free Microsoft antispyware software. So I just need the antivirus software - right? I wish I could tell you more system specifics like RAM, type of processor, etc. but I don't know that off the top of my head. (The computer is at home, and I'm at work. If possible, I'd like to buy the software on my way home tonight.)

    Any advice?

    Hi rexodus

If you read through "article152", sourced by the link below my signature, you will see plenty of recommendations for antivirus, firewalls, antispyware, spyware intrusion protection and so on.

If you want a profile of what conmprises your PC, including access key authorisiation codes, download Everest here [also free]....

....and have it scan your computer. It will present you with a detailed report.

    Hope that helps.

No need to Buy an A/V when there are a couple of good ones for free.

    Free AVG : http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/

    Or Avast :http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

I have used AVG free for over two years and just love. Many, many people here use the free AVG.

As far as slowing down the PC, boy 1997 PC running XP is going to be slow, you should have probably stayed with Win 98. Really need 256 RAM or more for XP to run fairly well. Did you buy a Copy of XP?

I also use the MS Anti spyware, with no problems.

Agree with Basementgeek. the biggest difference between 98 and XP for your system is the amount of RAM XP uses just to run. Most older computers that were set up for 98 had 64 or 128mb of RAM. If you are going to run XP, you must have at least 256mb of RAM. If you don't, that is what is slowing you down. Charlie

Unless you need something specific from XP, 98 will run much better than XP on the older hardware.
