Default Control Panel Freezes on Opening

While I'm at it, there's another (smaller) problem with the computer. Opening the Control Panel causes the computer to lock up and an error report to be sent to MS. This can be worked around by searching for the specific area of the control panel you want to use in Help and accessing it that way, but that takes a little bit. My system is now spyware free (Thanks! ), so I don't think that would be the problem.

There is probably a damaged windows file. Try Start>Run>type in chkdsk /f (note space between k and /)>a window will open asking if you want to run chkdsk on next reboot >y and enter. Reboot your PC and allow chkdsk to run. This will hopefully correct any damaged windows files. For further information on chkdsk see http://www.microsoft.com/resources/d...us/chkdsk.mspx . Hope this does it for you.

    Keep us updated.

It ran and didn't seem to find anything. The Control Panel still hangs, brings up an error reporting box, it sends and hangs. This starts another error report which will also send and hang. After that I have to use Task Manager to close Control Panel.

    Error signature:

    AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: browseui.dll
    ModVer: 6.0.2900.2753 Offset: 00012a2f

Hi drewdat - Do you have the latest Windows updates? Go here -
    http://update.microsoft.com/windowsu....aspx?ln=en-us
and it will scan your system and offer recommended updates, if any.
If this doesn't help, reinstall IE6 and see if that does the trick. regards

There aren't any updates besides the modem one which breaks the modem.

I tried to download IE 6 SP1, but it won't install. Is there a SP2 version independent from the SP2 Update?
