What's the purpose of partitioning the HDD? 40 gig doesn't seem that big to me.

That does not answer my question. Is it supposed to be short for something? You are the only person I have seen to use this "term".

you know the dos command SYS <Drive> and it's effect? i applied it on this disk. the link i gave you is only meant to f.y.i. a quick synopsis as to why i want to do a resize. now any suggestions? i was wondering if fdisk can add a logical or extended partition in addition to the existing primary one and leave it (the primary) intact.

Im a little confused on the total overall picture of what you are trying to do, but wouldnt it just be easier and same price to get a new hard drive. If your gonna spend $60-$80, just get a new harddrive and do dual ones.

actually no i did not want to spend any money at all. but i got around the issue. i ended up using zeleps' freeware partition resizer after reading it's manual extensively. turned out to be simple to use, worked great and i did not lose any data at all on c: drive.

heh, kind of funny, on the main page there's an article on how to repartition a harddrive without reformatting...
