    Default no network connection

I just did a fresh install of xp on a friend's computer. The onboard nic is a realtek, it is in device manager, no conflicts. I can ping it no problem. When I connect the cable modem it isn't seen by the modem at all. I can use the same cable and modem for my own computer. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the nic. Upon bootup i see the nic and it is enabled. Just for the heck of it I connected the nic to a router and the router doesn't see it neither. Tried the router with my own computer and that worked no problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Try another nic, sounds like a bad RJ45 connector to me.

Check to see if there are two nics. Some folk add a card when there is already one onboard.
Connecting the cable to the wrong socket is a common mistake. Done it myself often enough.
