Default Setting up again with WIN 98 after reformat

I am in the process of setting up my old acer laptop with win98 for a christmas present for a friend. It was originally on win95 but then added some more RAM and upgraded to WIN 98. It died a couple of years ago with multiple virus infections. I have just reformatted it and reinstalled win98 and microsoft office 2003 Professional. I need to get it internet functional, and have used inetwiz to instal a ISP provider temporarily so can get onto the microsoft site and update win98 and get antivirus, firewall etc onto the machine.

Cannot establish an internet connection- first problem! Cant even get a dial tone. PCPMIA modem driver was supposedly found by windows. Unsure how to proceed?

Also I want to check my system rosources, size of hard drive, RAM etc and keep an eye on these as this baby is running close to maxed out being an older 8? year old laptop. How do I do that with win98, as task manager does not list resouces and processes running?
    I am all ears

in your control panel select sytem and in the general tab you should see a listing of some of your system resources.
in mycomputer point to your hd you should see HD space on your left used & free.
