Default Problem with Add/Remove Program Tool

I have programs listed in the Add/Remove Program Tool for XP that are no longer on my machine. Is there a utility program that will edit the Registry and remove them safely from the listing of installed software?

I tried using the instructions on the Windows website and it did not work properly. The program titles still showed in the list even though the buttons for choosing to remove or change the program were gone as were the information lines that displayed the size, frequency of use, and the last date the program was used. I would like to avoid using regedit32 again if there is any way possible.
