I recently bought the above hard drive that connects via a USB port and although it appears in Device Manager it does not appear in My Computer to allow me access. Any suggests? My computer is an Advent 3308 with XP and SP2.
More than likely you need to format the drive. Go into your start menu > control panel > administrative tools > computer management.
Once there, under the "Storage" section click "disk management", after clicking it, the right side will now show all logical disks attached to the computer. The bottom half of the right window will show all actual drives, there should be listed your USB Drive with a black area. You need to right click it and partition it, then format it. After it's finished formatting, you'll get a new drive letter for it and be able to use it.
Alright, so in Device Manager do you see the drive listed under "Disk Drives"? Also, look under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" you should see "USB Mass Storage Device" when it's connected. If you do not see either then you're missing some drivers.
Under Disk Drives, I find
SAMSUNG SV4002H with DRIVER details;
C:\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\disk.sys and
C:|WINDOWS\System32\drivers\PartMgr.sys
Under USB Serial Bus Controllers, I find
intel(r) 82801BA/BAM USB Universal Host Controller - 2442
intel(r) 82801BA/BAM USB Universal Host Controller - 2444
with both having Drivers details of
C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\usbuhci.sys
Also listed under USB Serial Host Controllers, I find two
USB Root Hub with driver details of C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\usbhub.sys
Then it's not being recognized by your computer at all. Although this KB article says SP 1 for XP give it a shot anyway, it has helped me a couple of times.
i also got this hdrive 2 go"i finding it rather slow when putting or dragging things on it.
is there any way i can speed this up
i took me 1 half hours to urn a film off that hd
am i doing something wrong
i had the exact same trouble but what you do is plug both of the plugs in without it being plugged into the hardrive itself. then plug it in the hardrive and it worked for me
