    Default NTLDR is compressed message

My friend performed system recovery on her HP Pavilion 540N Intel Pentium 4 computer and this is the message she got on a black screen :" NTLDR is compressed" and the next line says, "Press Control Alt Delete to restart".
When she does, the computer starts to reboot but only gets to the HP Invent screen and then immediately goes back to the NTLDR message. She has Windows XP. The reason she tried the recovery was because her computer would automatically restart on its own every few minutes and would only load some programs before restarting. She has performed system recovery a few more times but the results are the same.

There is nowhere that I can see on the HP recovery to type any commands. The mouse is now not working as well. Please help!

We will be glad to give a phone number if anyone can help further.

Hi moneylady - Do not under any circumstances post personal telephone numbers or email addresses in these, or any other Forums. You will expose yourself to all the weirdos of the world. These details would also be removed, in your own interest, by the moderators.
Someone may be able to help with your problem in due course. Regards

    Try this:
Boot from your Windows XP original CD. Then go to the recovery console (you should be prompted to press R to go to the recovery console). You should then get a command prompt.

Type: (and press Enter after each line)
    Code:
    c:
    cd\
    attrib -c ntldr
Hopefully that will do the trick. Rebbot and give it a try. If it still doesn't work, reboot with the CD again and type
    Code:
    fixmbr
    fixboot
Let us know if these work!

Default getting NTLDR is compressed error msg

After i put my restore/recovery CD, i don't see any DOS prompt to enter ATTRIB...

Pls advise how to proceed on this. I can see only the recovery CD console not the dos prompt console.

The suggestion from OSC will only work if you have the original XP installation disk. The Restore/recovery disk that came with your computer is not a XP installation disk but can perform the same task.
