    Default Setting higher graphics setting

I have a Win 98 system that due to various viruses I simply reloaded Win 98. The details for the system are:
    Windows 98 - second edition 4.10.2222a

    Pentium 2 processor

    128 M RAM

Dispay hardware is listed as Standard PCI graphics adapter.

Not sure of the brand of monitor (older style but capable of better graphics than we are now getting).

The highest setting we can now do for the display is 16 color and 640x480 size. We used to be able to set it to 256 and 1024x800 (I think that was the dimentions).

We have internet connection from this system and have downloaded all available Windows 98 updates.

What do I do to get back the better resolution?

    Thanks,
    Carolyn

Hi - You need to install drivers for the graphics card. Do you have any other discs for the PC? Or was it setup at a higher resolution when you bought it? Regards.
I know everything about nothing, nothing about everything and precious little about the bit in between.

Hi - If you don't have any other discs, go to the link below and download and run this free program. It wil display a report of your system. Print it if you can, it provides a lot of useful information.
Under the heading 'Display' what are the details. Regards.

I only have the Win 98 disk, it had a higher resolution when I got it.

I did not see a "link below" on your message. Could you post again?

    Thanks,
    Carolyn

I'm going to assume that Galena was referring to www.belarc.com (click the free download link at the top of page)

Once you know what display adapter (graphics card ) you have, you should be able to download the correct driver from the card manufactuer or from www.driverguide.com For 98, your best bet will probably be the driver guide site. The driver will probably be downloaded as a zip file, you will need to unzip to a location you can find (desktop is good). Exactly how you install the new driver will vary, so I won't go into it just yet to avoid confusion. Charlie

it would also help abit if you could let us know your system's manufacturer and it's specific model.
we are created with an equal opportunity to be unequal.

Thanks Charlie - It was the Belarc link. I guess the old grey matter is dying off faster than I realised

Hi cw - See if you can update the driver by -
'Start'>'Settings'>'Control Panel'>Double click 'System'>'Device Manager' tab>Click '+' beside 'Display Adapters', opens list (may be only one item detailed)>Right click item>'Properties'>'Driver' tab>Bottom Right 'Update Driver'>'Next'>Check 'Search for better drivers etc'>'Next'>Check 'Microsoft Windows Update>Next. Just carry on following it through. Let us know how that goes. Regards.

Ok, I checked for updated drivers for both the display card and the monitor and it says that the most current driver is already installed and in use.

This is frustrating, I know we used to get 256 color and better resolution.

Thanks for all the help so far...

    What can I try next?

    Thanks,
    Carolyn
