    Default wiping hard drive

Hi I want to sell my pc, and after reading an article in the newspaper about how easy it is for anyone to retrieve your passwords and online
banking info I want to know what software will erase my info. plus if I do wipe my hard drive will the software re-install as the software was already installed by the manafacturer also is there any software to check to see if the erasing has actually done the job

The best free utility is DBAN, available here:
    http://dban.sourceforge.net/

You can download the floppy version or the CD version. I think it downloads as a zip file, so unzip, click on it, then it will make a floppy or CD. Set the BIOS to boot from either the floppy or CD drive first, then boot. Follow the on screen prompts. Autonuke will erase every hard drive it finds. It could take over an hour depending on the size of the drive and the speed of the computer. You will then need to reload the operating system, drivers and all updates- so you need either a Windows installation CD or a recovery CD from the computer manufactuer.
