    Default DMA vs PIO-> What is the difference?

    Hey guys,
    What is the difference between those 2? I looked under:
    Device Manager-> IDE/ATA/Atapi controllers->Primary IDE channel
    Device Manager-> IDE/ATA/Atapi controllers->Secondary IDE channel

    My primary is set to the DMA 5, but my secondary is set to PIO even though I have highlighted "DMA if available".

    My question is if it really matters what it is set to.
    Thanks,
    BOb

    This is the way I understand it. DMA is faster and uses less resources than PIO. Your hard drive is on the primary channel and is running with DMA, that is good. Your CD drive is on the secondary channel, your computer is trying to run DMA on that channel (DMA if available), but the drive can't handle it (too many errors), so XP reverts to PIO to solve the problem. Most new CD drives should handle DMA. It could slow down access from the drive, but if it isn't causing any problems, you should be OK. Charlie
