    Default Reformatting hard drive

I would like to donate my computer to a recycling program. The recycle center said the best way to remove personal information is to reformat the hard drive. Is this true? How do I reformat the hard drive? Thanks!

Dban is the way to go, it will completely erase and overwrite the hard drive multiple times. Then you can reload the O/S. There are programs that will secure erase specific files, but what about the files you forgot about? Dban is available in floppy and CD version. The CD version downloads as an ISO image, burn the ISO to CD then boot from CD. The floppy version downloads as a file too big for a floppy, run it from windows and it will extract the necessary files and write to a floppy. Then boot from the floppy. WARNING- when you boot it will erase all hard drives in auto mode, if you have a second hard drive that you don't wish to erase, unplug it before you reboot. Avilable here:

It could take over an hour to erase the drive, but it is done right.
