Default When I boot up my Gateway, all see is a dash mark on the top

I lost the IDE cable for my 3.5" Floppy diskette drive, but i don't think that's the reason for the hard drive not booting up...there are too many different power cords that i can't figure out if I ruined the hard drive.

What are you doing inside there anyway, Do you see the bios screen come up thats the screen that flashes by quickly then the windows loads or does the dash come up right away-you are not loading the operating system what ever one your using, could be as simple as a bios battery or hard drive or cables you were talking about or made reference to.

Most probably you disconnected your hard drive IDE cable from the motherboard or its power source. Go back inside and make sure all cables are connected properly.
