Default Recover old hard drive via external enclosure, no access

I put my hard drive from an old laptop (mother board failure) to an external hard drive enclosure and have successfully hooked it up to my new computer. When I try to access my folder (i.e. "My Documents"), I get a message that access is denied. I suspect this is because I had my old computer password protected, but I'm not sure. I have tried to share the folder, but again I get the message that access is denied. Any suggestions on what I can do? Thanks so much for any advice

I'll give credit to PartieHonteuse for this link, but try taking ownership of the files. Instructions here:

    Hi Charlie,
Thank you so much for your help!! This worked PERFECTLY! It also opened my eyes to the fact that password protection on a computer is not as secure as I naively assumed.

    Thanks again!
