Boot from your WinXP cd and follow the directions. Choose Repair. Then type the following:

    Attrib -H -R -S C:\Boot.ini
    DEL C:\Boot.ini
    BootCfg /Rebuild
    Fixboot
If it is to be me, it is to be me.

Are you updating or doing a clean install?
The far better way, even though it requires more work, is to do a clean install.
This means backing up your data, mp3 pics etc and choosing to reformat the drive when installing XP. You will need to reinstall your software.
The advantages of doing it this way is you do not inherent any corrupt files from ME, which was the worse OS Microsoft have ever released.
Also you will get the more stable and faster NTFS format instead of the aging FAT32 format.
XP will run smoother, faster and with far less problem.
Backing up can be done to CD's DVDs, a second (slave drive) or a second partition on the one hard drive.
Take control of your life. Leave others to control their own.
