My apologies in advance for being a novice computer user.

I inserted a Scandisk key drive into my computer to view some files. The computer locked up and I shut it down and removed the key drive from the USB port. I then started up the computer and got the following message:

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt
C:\windows\system32\config\system

You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup CD-Rom. Select "r" at the first screen to start repair."

I searched this website and found the Mike E. article dated 01-02-2006. I started the computer in Safe Mode, but did not have the option of rebooting in Recovery Console. I found my XP reinstallation disk, and placed it in computer, but nothing happened. I have used ctrl+alt+delete to restart, and I still get back to the screen with the above error message. What am I doing wrong? How can I get the computer to boot up from the CD drive with the reinstallation disk in it?
Thanks for any help or suggestions.
