I have in my computer "BENQ 56X" AS MASTER AND SONY DVDRW DRU-530A AS SLAVE.
Both were working with no problem.
I replaced hard drive and reinstall all softwares which I had before.
Everything was working OK including cdrom and dvdrw.
Then cd rom start have some problems then within two weeks it stop working.
    Here is the situation;
Cdrom doesn't recognise disk. like there is no disk in the cdrom.
When I go to Cmos and click on cdrom drive here it show and recognize cdrom as ATAPI CD-ROM DRIVE 56MAX as master and SONY DVD-RW DRU-530 as slave.
When I go to device manager it also show both of them same way.
In Device Manager when I right click on cd-rom device then property it indicates that this device is working properly.
Door on cd-rom opens and closes normaly.
Everything looks normal exept disk doesn't spin and it is not recognized.
I tryed several disks and it is same problem.
When I insert disk in cd-rom and go to window explorer and click on cd-rom then small window pops on screen with massage "INSERT DISK IN CD-ROM.

I have generic coputer Pentiun 4 2.0 ghz and 512 mb ram.

Download the drives from the manufacturer's sites (as a rule, don't rely on MS updates for 3rd party hardware). Are you by any chance using Nero software, and if so, are you running InCD?

Yes I am using Nero 7 Ultra, but not from cd it is loaded into hard drive.
As for driver I do not know where to find driver for this device.
The only name on front of cd-rom says BENQ.
I went to BENQ site there is nothing indicating CD-ROM or driver.

Also I did not change any jumpers since I insatlled cd-rom few years back.
It was working fine until recently when it stopped.
Yes I am using DRU-530A and it is working fine.

    Thank You all

If you're using Nero's InCD, delete the program in the Add/Remove (it's installed seperate from the main Nero installation). InCD for some reason can/does mess up reading of CD/DVD dives. Keep us posted.

We had somebody a few days ago with a similar problem. It turned out that she had left a CD in the drive when she shut down and for some reason it was causing a problem. So, first question- is there a Cd (or DVD) in the drive? If not, try this:

Start with the cable, cheap and easy. If that doesn't work, try disconnecting the cable from both drives and booting the computer. Allow it to boot all the way, then shut down normally. Reconnect the cable and boot, it should find them as new hardware and install automatically. If still no joy, you could try a system restore back to before the problem. It is possible that the IDE connection on the motherboard is dead. If that is the case, you can get an IDE pci card to add IDE ports. Charlie
