    Default New Site Design

    Hi all,

After a few months with the black/gray style, the time had some to get rid of it. I don't feel that it was inviting to the type of new computer users that come to the site. It also doesn't fit with my personal view of the site as a friendly, colorful place to meet new friends and solve computer problems.

So, we're playing with putting this new design out with some more vibrant colors at the top and some softer colors for the toolbar.

That said, if you really prefer the Black design, that's cool - you can still use it simply by scrolling down to the bottom of the page. There is a drop-down box that currently says "H2G Style" - just change that to "SimpleBlack" and you'll return to the way it was.

    A few more notes:

    • Gone are the ads in the upper right corner. Once again, registered users of H2G will no longer see any ads of any kind. I apologize that took so long!
    • I added Facebook and Twitter icons to the top toolbar. Yes, we now have Facebook and Twitter pages, so if you are members of those sites, please "Like" us or "Follow" us, accordingly. It helps us get the word out about this tremendous little community we've built here.
    • I'm also tweaking the front page with an eye to make it much simpler experience for new visitors. If you have any ideas about that, please let me know!

Have a comment, question, complaint or irrational rant that you want to let me know about? Just PM me anytime! All feedback is welcome - and the feedback I have already gotten has been very valuable. Thanks all!

Well done Osc. I still miss the chance to tip my hat to other users through the Shout Box. It's nice to see who is online and exchange some banter. How about some sort of Users Board with a clear indication that it has nothing to do with looking for help?

It's nice to have the option of different skins. Personally, I'll stick with the SimpleBlack option, simply because it has more contrast and I can read the menus easier. There are also no Facebook or Twitter buttons which are of no interest to me.

Like the cleaner Home page, but would echo RDL's request for the Shout Box. It was a significant part of the community aspect of H2G.

The chatbox is back! The question is, where should it go? Right now it's at the top of the page, on only the Forum home page and the Thread list page. Does that work?

Great Oscar, I like it at the top as it doesn't cramp the main window and possibly it will be more noticeable there too. The Home page and Thread list page are fine with me. To be honest, I'm not a great supporter of the shout box, especially when the in-jokes and personal shouts might be better put in a PM ... but that's just me, at least there's a shut down option. Thanks.

    PS.
on only the Forum home page and the Thread list page
. No, it appears on all the forum pages.

I agree with the smilies. That new wink just gives me the willies!

With reference to the shoutbox question, the part that creates the 11px dropdown box is contained here:

    <form id="vsacb_search" name="vsacb_search" action="http://www.help2go.com/misc.php?do=ccarc" method="post"> <table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" border="0" width="100%" align="center"> <tr class="blocksubhead" style="margin:0px;"> <td class="blocksubhead" align="left"> <select id="vsacb_m_size" name="vsacb_m_size" onchange="return VSacb_saveCookie('vsachatbox_txtsize', this.value);"> <option value="11" selected="selected">11px</option> </select> <span style="display:none"> <img src="http://www.help2go.com/images/editor/separator.gif" border="0" alt="" />
    Status: <span id="vsacb_infoarea" class="shade">Loading...</span></span> </td> <td class="blocksubhead" align="right" style="margin:0px;"> <input type="hidden" name="securitytoken" value="1279999463-abdea47b6986d59e34b1eaea81f90529ede2dedd" /> <input type="text" class="primary textbox" name="cbt" size="20" onfocus="if(!this._haschanged){this.value=''};this._haschanged=true;" value="Search Messages" /> <input type="submit" class="button" value="Go" /> </td> </tr> </table> </form>

but this also includes the search messages option...

I believe removing this chunk should not do too much damage... Have a play

I think the position of the new Chat Box is just right. It's clear and easy to use.

Hi Osc, great new site - but I'm with the smilies request - pls. can we have the old ones back? The new ones all seem to run into each other and just don't have any ... emotion ..!
Today is the dawn of another error ...
