Hi all;
I switched off my computer following the normal shut down procedures and later tried to switch it back on again. Nothing happened... Checked main fuse and power connections all OK. I removed the side panel from the machine and noticed that when I attempted to switch the machine on the cooling fans just kicked, nothing more. I have no power on indication on the front panel. The front panel 'ON' switch appears to be OK in that I have done a continuity check across the flying leads from the switch to the motherboard. Whilst jiggling these flyleads around looking for intermittency the fans kicked in properly and stayed running, however nothing else worked; no power on LED, no HDD LED. I put a meter across some of the various spare connectors from the PSU and found all the voltages to be low ie 12v rail running at 7v; 5v at less than 3v etc. I tried removing the supply connectors from the various units within the computer in case one of them was loading the PSU outputs . This made no difference. I tried reseating the RAM cards again no result.
The PSU is an ATX-250GT and I suspect that this may have failed. However I am not convinced.
The computer is about 5 years old and has a ton of info I need to keep.
It runs M/S XP with SP2.
The HDD is a Seagate Barracuda 7200-7 160Gb.
If all else fails, is it possible to run the HDD in an enclosure as an External HDD for another computer?
If so what do I do about the 12v and 5v supplies the unit needs?
If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate them.
I am just going out to buy a replacement PSU in case the original has failed.
I cannot talk to the service dept of the computer manufacturer since the company went bankrupt some time ago...
So HELP! please...
Thanks
-Recently I have got the blue screen. "A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer."

-I go to "start" and click on search, partially blank window comes up and nothing happens.

I have ran Panda Active Scan and it shows nothing. My usual virus scanner shows nothing. I have ran "check disc" but it didn't help but so far no blue screen yet. It seems like maybe some files are missing?????? Is this maybe one problem causing this or is a combination of many? Don't know too much about the internal workings of computers.
Thanks

Well, my friend has an older HP Pavilion XT963 that suddenly stopped working, and I agreed to take a look at it. When I turn the computer on, the HP Logo pops up, then a black screen with the words, "OPerating System Not Found" After monkeying around for a few moments, pulling the HD and installing it in my computer, it clicked loudly when I hooked it up, so I made the assumption the HD was fried. And put in a replacement.

Well, the computer boots to the HP screen, but then it just goes completely black. hitting the function keys doesn't bring up any of the menus it should, so I can't set the computer to boot from CD to try to install windows....

Is it something as simple as a BIOS battery, or is the motherboard fried? Or, is there something here I'm just not seeing... any ideas or tips would be appreciated.

Hi, I recently had help in resolving a suspected spyware problem and now find that I can't copy any links. In hi-lighting any link in the address bar in order to cut and paste it, the moment I click on "copy" the hi-lighting disappears and I can't copy it. I can cut and paste anything on a page, just not anything in the address bar.

What has also appeared is a tab in the browser bar that indicates what site or link I'm on at the moment, for example, it now says "Help2go-Post new thread". I've tried to eliminated this tab but can't find a way to do so. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I just installed a 2nd HD in my Desktop PC. I installed XP using Dell OEM disk and everything went fine. I was able to dual boot from either HD(XP also on old HD) perfectly. Once I had all my programs and files on the new HD I decided it would be great to wipe the old drive and do a clean XP install on that as well.

My problems started with the OEM disk not installing because I had upgraded to SP3 and the disk is SP1. I then erased the old HD using disk management in windows and formatted the HD. Upon boot-up I get that dreaded missing hal.dll file and nothing allows the XP install disk to load. By erasing the disk I obviously lost my ability to boot the old HD.

My boot.ini settings still show both XP installs. I believe it doesn't matter what they're called as long as the rdisk and partition values are correct. I'm just hoping this is a setting issue or something and my other working OS is of some use in solving this. I located the hal file in the new OS and copied it to the old HD. It didn't help but I guess you need an OS to assign it to. It's just in there now as a file. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

How do I set up my Epson DX8400 printer as a network printer on my wireless network?
Do I need to buy any additional hardware?
I have a netgear DGB834G router, and want to use the printer with a Sony laptop an IBM laptop and an Evesham desk top.
The desktop and the IBM are both running XP the Sony is running Vista all are connected to the router wirelessly
I have attempted to follow the Microsoft advice here Set up a wireless network in a small office
Both the lap tops fails to print. The printer was originally a local printer attached to the desktop,
