helllo
i hope this is the correct forum to post this
i'm getting warnings of a tr\dropper.gen trojan from avira antivir. the tr\dropper.gen trojan is located in c:\windows\system32\athcfg11.dll
i believe it has something to do with my atheros client utility program which is the network adaptor program i use to connect to the internet. so when i select "deny access" or "quarantine" with antivir i can't get online. so i've been choosing to "ignore" it instead so i can post on here.
i have a hijackthis log

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM)
- Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
- At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to the following:
- Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
- Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
- Then click Finish.
- If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
- Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
- When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
- Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
- When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
- The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
- Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.
----------
Download CCleaner Slim and save it to your Desktop.
When the file has been saved, go to your Desktop and double-click on ccsetupxxx_slim.exe
Follow the prompts to install the program.
Complete the installation then:
- Double-click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
- Click on the Options block on the left, then choose Cookies.
- Under Cookies to Delete, highlight any cookies you would like to retain permanently
- Click the right arrow > to move them to the Cookies to Keep window.
- Go into Options > Advanced uncheck Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours
- Click Cleaner on the left then Run Cleaner on the right to run the program.
- Important: Make sure that ALL browser windows are closed before selecting Run Cleaner
- Caution: It is not recommended that you use the 'Registry' feature unless you are very familiar with the registry.
- Exit CCleaner after it has completed its process.

We need to do a more thorough scan.
First:
Your Java is out of date.
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to infect your system.
First install the new Sun Java Runtime Environment
Be sure to close all browser windows before beginning the install.
Remove the old version(s)
- Download JavaRa and unzip the file to your Desktop.
- Open JavaRA.exe and choose Remove Older Versions
- Once complete exit JavaRA and delete the program.
- Run CCleaner.
----------
Run the Kaspersky Online Scanner
In Microsoft Windows Vista, you must open the Web browser using the Run as Administrator command. From the Desktop right click the icon to open the browser and choose Run as Administrator.
- Click on SCAN NOW
- Click Accept.
- The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
- Once the files have been downloaded locate the Scan Settings and have it scan My Computer.
- The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it finish.
When the scan is done, in the Scan is complete window, any infection is displayed.
There is no option to clean/disinfect, however, we need to analyze the information on the report.
To obtain the report:
Click on: Save Report As
- Next, in the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop.
- In the File name area use KScan, or something similar.
- In Save as type: click the drop arrow and select: Text file [*.txt]
- Then, click: Save

Copy and paste the Kaspersky Online Scanner Report in your next reply.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%..

I'm not sure what is being identified as the dropper.gen. Does it show a file path and if so can you post it here?
The Kaspersky scan just shows mIRC. Do you use mIRC?.

Well then that explains it. I'm pretty sure it is a false positive.
Does this sound like anything you hve installed?
Let's scan it with multiple antivirus engines to be sure.athcfg11res.dll is a ACAPIRES belonging to Atheros Configuration API Res Dynamic Link Library from Atheros Communications, Inc.
Scan Suspicious File(s)
Use the VirusTotal.com - Multi engine on-line virus scanner
(If more than one file needs scanned they must be done separately and logs posted for each one)
- Copy the file path in the below Code box:
Code:C:\WINDOWS\system32\athcfg11res.dll
- At the upload site, click once inside the window next to Browse.
- Press Ctrl+V on the keyboard (both at the same time) to paste the file path into the window.
- Next click Send File
- Your file will possibly be entered into a queue which normally takes less than a minute to clear.
- This will perform a scan across multiple different virus scanning engines.
- Important: Wait for all of the scanning engines to complete.
- Copy and then Paste the link to the results in the next reply.

here's the virustotal scan report
http://www.virustotal.com/analisis/5...18b9423fdbe225
it seems i have some other issues as well...?
- 09-24-2008 11:39 AM #10
You can let Avira know about this at their Sample Submission page so they can correct it in the database.
What other problems are you having? Everything in the logs looks fine. You can uninstall mIRC if you don't use it any more..
