help computer freezing up

this has never happened to my computer until yesterday when i was doing a scan and my computer just froze up and since then has done it 5 or more times i don't know what to do i tried to scan it again and it froze again and when i try to shut it down it froze up please help i dont know what online scans to do
i have done the ccleaner & Anti-malware & SuperAntiSpyware and everything seems fine until i try to scan with AVG it keeps freezing
