    Run this then please.

Download OTCleanIt.exe and save it to your Desktop.

    • Double-click OTCleanIt.exe.
    • Click the CleanUp! button.
    • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
    • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
    • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it yourself.

Important: Restart the computer before continuing.

    Keep Malawarebytes & CCleaner.

CCleaner is a good daily drive cleaner to keep the PC running smooth. Update and run Malawarebytes every now and then to make sure nothing new has snuck in.

A few more suggestions. Let me know if you have any questions.

Use the Secunia Software Inspector to check for out of date software.
    Click Start Now
Check the box next to Enable thorough system inspection.
    Click Start
Allow the scan to finish and scroll down to see if any updates are needed.
    Update anything listed.

    ----------

Go to Microsoft Windows Update and get all critical security updates. (you will need to use Internet Explorer to do this)

    ----------

SpywareBlaster - Secure your Internet Explorer to make it harder for these ActiveX programs to run on your computer. Also stop certain cookies from being added to your computer when running Mozilla based browsers like Firefox.
    * Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

To prevent unknown applications from being installed on your computer install WinPatrol 2008
    * Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software

I would suggest using SiteAdvisor. SiteAdvisor rates sites on business practices and Spam. Safety ratings from McAfee SiteAdvisor are based on automated safety tests of Web sites.

Cool so I installed the Avast anti-virus and it runs smoothly.
Also i ran the Secunia Software Inspector and I updated everything that needed to.

I installed the McAfee Site Advisor (very helpful)

    I also installed SpywareBlaster

and Windows Update found no new updates (except SP3 which i'm not willing to install just yet)

Glad it worked and thanks for hanging in there. I know that was a lot of work but it's worth it!!

Let us know if anything else comes up.

If you do any online banking, eBay, PayPal etc then I would suggest installing a free third party firewall also. I prefer Comodo.

    Remember only install ONE firewall

    1) Comodo (Uncheck during installation "Install Comodo SafeSurf..", Make Comodo my default search provider" and "Make Comodo Search my homepage" if you choose this one)
    2) Online Armor
    3) Sunbelt/Kerio
    4) Agnitum
    5) PC Tools Firewall Plus

If you are using the built-in Windows XP firewall, it is not recommended as it does not block outgoing connections. This means that any malware on your computer is free to "phone home" for more instructions. Simply put, Windows XP contains a mediocre firewall. This firewall is NO replacement for a dedicated software solution. Remember to use only one firewall at the same time.

    Safe surfing...
