    Default Suspicious of programmer

Hi, My computer was put together several years ago by a guy I met through a friend. He was a programming student at the time and he said he could do it much cheaper than a professional which was my priority at the time.
I am not a computer literate person and am very easily lost by jargon and technical language. After several years of not being entirely happy with its performance, and some strange incidents of not having 'permission' to make changes despite being the computer admin, I hear the man who built my computer has been caught by several people installing items on their computers which he shouldn't have. Items such as 'back doors' and 'remote desktops'. I am now terrified that he has installed something like this on my computer to spy on me and I have no idea how to find something if it is there.
I have all the anti-virus software advised in this forum, however they routinely find nothing other than the odd cookie.
I searched through all my running applications and googled everything in there but I didn't find anything suspicious.
I just need some help in knowing where to look and what I might be looking for.
It could be that I'm just being paranoid, but I am no longer friends with this man and the though of him being able to access my computer is very frightening.

Any help would be much appreciated,
    J.

OK thank you. It kills me that I have very little idea what is going on with my computer. I've tried to get other computer knowledgeable friends to look at it but they always end up installing things and changing things and I never know what they're doing.

Should probably invest in a typewriter

I already had the Malwarebytes programme it just needed an update. It found 9 bits of adware which it removed.

Sorry for lateness of reply, hopefully this is what you were after.
