Default System restore unavailable.

Hi, newby hear,
I had a problem with logging onto skype and could not address the problem as the program would not recognize my email address. I have used this program for many months without problems. I thought I would do a system restore but all attempts failed. I manually turned off system restore did a virus scan which showed all clear, re-engaged system restore function but still system would not allow me to do a restore.
I have changed my anti virus software, done a malware scan, and performed a cclean function, all have shown clear of defects. I enclose a hijackthis log as I am at wits end trying to solve the problem.

Hi and welcome to Help2Go!

As the symptoms are not symptoms of malware, the scans come back clean and your HijackThis log also looks good I think that you can better post in this subforum:
Computer Help - Help2Go
Create a new topic and tell as much about your problem as possible.

There are two things though that I saw in your HijackTHis log:
- You have two Anti-Virus programs active
- You do not have a third-party firewall

Here are my recommendations.
Quote:
Disable one of your Anti Virus programs.
You are operating your computer with multiple Anti Virus programs running in memory at once:
Ashampoo AntiVirus
AVG Free 8

Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

If you choose to install more than one antivirus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.

There are basically two types of these programs:
On-Access and On-Demand

On-Access Scanners
As the name implies, it runs in the background all the time the PC is turned on and running. The main function of an on-access scanner is to monitor activity on your machine.

On-Demand Scanners
As the name implies, are scanners that only run when you ask them to.
Such as:
Online Scans and scanners that run on your machine but are not actively scanning your machine.

Please disable or uninstall one or the other so they do not conflict.
Quote:
Use a Firewall
Using a Firewall on your computer can be very important. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. There are some different situations you can be in where a third-party firewall may or may not be a good addition to your system:
  • If you are not using Windows XP or Vista, but an older version I recommend you to use a firewall.
  • If you are using Windows XP or Vista, but are on dial-up I recommend you to use a firewall.
  • If you are using Windows XP or Vista and are using broadband, but are not experienced in using firewalls and getting the choice to allow or disallow things I recommend you to use Windows Firewall.
  • If you are using Windows XP or Vista, are using broadband and experienced, I recommend you to disable Windows Firewall (as it is not perfect) and get a third-party firewall.

Here are some firewalls which are free for personal use and most used:
Kerio Personal Firewall (Free version after 30 days)
Online Armor Free

Or you could buy their paid version online or in a shop nearby:
Kerio Personal Firewall (Continue paid version after 30 days)
Online Armor or Online Armor AV+ with Anti-Virus included
Regards,
John.
