Slow startup, unexpected crashes, etc. HijackThis log included.

Noted Symptoms:
-About a minute of a blank screen with only the pointer after going through the log in screen.
-Every 2 or 3 weeks my computer will randomly crash with the BSOD, claiming to have missnig drivers and windows files.
-Startup process after the minute or so of a blank screen is extremely slow.
-Just a few days ago I experienced my desktop completely frozen with a loss of the ability to right click on the desktop as well. Everything else worked fine.

I've run multiple virus scans, Registry Booster, and even run the sfc /scannow tool to check for missing Windows files. So far everything seems to be fine, and given the technical specs of my computer, I know that I should be running at a much faster speed than I am. Below is the HijackThis log.

The real-time protection of two antivirus programs may conflict with each other and cause the following:

• False Alarms: When the anti virus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't.
• Conflicts: Your system may lock up due to both products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
• Performance: More that one antivirus will cause your PC to become slow and it may even crash or blue screen.
• Less protection: Two antivirus trying to scan the same file may interfere with the process and allow a malicious file onto the computer without notice to you.

This alone could be cause for what you are experiencing. You're going to have to decide which AntiVirus you want to uninstall.

Please download AppRemover from here and install to the desktop.

• Double click the icon and click Run
• Click Next>>
• Under Select Removal Type click on Remove Security Application then click on Next>>
• The program will perform a detailed scan on your computer for security applications.
• Once it is finished click Next>>
• In the next pane place a check mark next to the AV that you would like to uninstall and click Next>>.

This will remove the Anti-Virus from your system.


Also:

RegistryBooster is a registry cleaner. We advise not to use this or any registry cleaner as there have been reports of them clearing out needed registry entries and messing up PC's. In addition, what they do clean up is so small that little or no advantages are noticed.

Modifying registry keys incorrectly can cause Windows instability, or make Windows unbootable. No registry cleaner is completely safe and the potential is ever present to cause more problems than they claim to fix.

Registry cleaners cannot distinguish between good and bad. If you run a registry cleaner, it will delete all those keys which are obsolete and sitting idle; but in reality, those keys may well be needed by some programs or windows at a later time.

Once you have uninstalled the AntiVirus of your choice, let us know if your computer is performing any better than it was before.

Did what you recommended and got rid of the remaining AVG files. I had previously tried to uninstall AVG, though some of the files had been left behind (Hence the problems). Some of the issues have improved, such as the time that it normally took for the startup process. However, since that time there have been a few glitchy problems here and there, such as unresponsive browser windows, program crashes, etc.

Hi mplaat,

Looks like there are still some residual files from AVG. Found the following entry in the Services (023's) list.

O23 - Service: AVG WatchDog (avgwd) - AVG Technologies CZ, s.r.o. - C:\Program Files (x86)\AVG\AVG10\avgwdsvc.exe

Let's try another approach here to get rid of AVG completely.

• Right click on the bar at the bottom of your screen and choose Task Manager from the list.
• On the Task Manager screen click on the Services tab at the top and look for the following service -->avgwd
• Right click and choose Stop Service

Close the Task Manager.

Next:

Download the AVG Uninstaller and run that.

Then follow the path below to delete the folder

C:\Program Files (x86)\AVG<---folder

Let me know if you are having the same issues with unresponsive browser windows, program crashes, etc.

Please download MiniToolBox and run it.

Checkmark following boxes:

• List last 10 Event Viewer log
• List Installed Programs

Click Go and post the log in your next reply.
