    Default Boot-up takes forever

Please can someone shine some light for me? I'm asked to fix a friends PC, they can't get the internet for a start (I'm working on this), but, boot-up also takes for ever!? Sorry I can't tell you what 'make or model' the computer is, the motherboard is very old & I cannot see any particular identification marks. The body itself is a desktop tower, the OS is Windows XP (I understand Microsoft are pulling the plug on XP on April 28 2014). I've removed various anti-virus programmes that were all running at the same time (not a good thing in itself), I've initiated a full system scan & found no infections whatsoever, and I've defragmented the system. Following this, and having rebooted, the boot time remains at approximately 7 minutes - enough time to grab a coffee & a full English breakfast!!! The system does like...0-60...eventually.....whilst being overtaken by a snail in turbo mode.....yes its THAT slow in booting up!!! Once the 'Windows XP' logo has run for approximately 7 minutes it then changes to a blank (black) screen & remains so for approximately (only approximately) 10 minutes. I don't want to throw the computer out of the window...yet!!! Any ideas...please?

Will it boot to safe mode with networking, and connect to the internet that way?

Restart the computer, keep tapping the f8 key during restart, get the black screen with white letters, use the arrow keys to select safemode with networking hit enter.

See if it connects to Google

Hi Zep516, thank you for the advice, I can now connect to the internet. But still it takes forever to boot up in the first place? And the performance is so, so sluggish. Would it be that he's trying to run too many programs & the processor can't handle it? The main concern is the initial boot-up which just seems to take forever?

Lets run some add ware scans first, adware can slow things down including boot.

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your Desktop.
    • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
    • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
    • Click the Scan button and wait for the process to complete.
    • Click the Report button and the report will open in Notepad.
    • NOTE: If you get an error message, it means that nothing was found. Exit from AdwCleaner.
    • Click on the Clean button follow the prompts.[/*]
    • A log file will automatically open after the scan has finished and the PC has rebooted.
    • Please post the content of that log file with your next answer.
    • You can find the log file at C:\AdwCleaner

    Next

Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your Desktop.

Please close your security software to avoid potential conflicts.
Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or 7, right-mouse click it and select Run as administrator.
The tool will open and start scanning your system.
Please be patient as this can take a while to complete, depending on your system's specifications.
On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your Desktop and will automatically open.
Please post the contents of JRT.txt into your reply.

In your next reply post the:
    *AdwCleaner Log.
    *JRT.txt Log.

    Thanks
    Joe

Long boot time are often caused by driver problems. Look in Device Manager for any errors. This goes along with Joe's question about Safe Mode.

Does it run fine once it does finally boot?

As a side note, be aware that XP support ends April 8th, not the 28th.

    Hi,

While I "look" over the Hijackthis log could you:

Clean out your temporary internet files and temp files.

Download TFC by OldTimer http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/TFC.exe to your desktop.

    Double-click TFC.exe to run it.

Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator

TFC will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.

    * Click the Start button to begin the cleaning process.
    * Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two.
    * Please let TFC run uninterrupted until it is finished.

Once TFC is finished it should restart your computer. If it does not, please manually restart the computer yourself to ensure a complete cleaning.

    Next

Please download MiniToolBox http://download.bleepingcomputer.com...iniToolBox.exe and run it.

    Checkmark following boxes:

    • Flush DNS
    • Report IE Proxy Settings
    • Reset IE Proxy Settings
    • Report FF Proxy Settings
    • Reset FF Proxy Settings
    • content of Hosts
    • List last 10 Event Viewer log
    • List Installed Programs
    • List Users, Partitions and Memory size
    • List Restore Points

Click Go and post the result.

    Thanks
    Joe
