    Default Computer Shutdowns/Freezes

Hi, I have a Dell running on Windows ME. In the last month it has been freezing up, shutting down, and giving us any number of error codes. (lmost recent - Error: 06 : 4614 : 00000033) Occasionally a blue screen too. I have run Spy sweeper, Trend micro house call, Panda activescan and all looks clean. Last night put it into Safe Mode and ran the full Scan Disk & Disk Defrag. I tried doing a system restore to put it back a couple weeks (prior to the problems occurring), but to no luck. I have found that using the Netscape browser causes less freeze-ups than IE. Not sure what else to do- any advice is greatly appreciated. Next move is to purchase new computer. We have AntiVir Guard loaded as our virus protection and Westell modem has a firewall. Thanks in advance for any suggestions/recommendations. In case it helps, here is my hijack this file:

    smdfl:

First thing that you must do is to destroy this really outdate HJT program and install and run the latest HJT program, available here:

    http://www.help2go.com/component/opt...topic/t,10003/

Do you remember what was the last thing you down loaded, before the slow down began?

The log is pretty clean, however I do see a couple that I would not use:

    VIEWPOINT

    Imgfarm

Imgfarm is FunWebProduct, which is considered Adware:

    http://www.networkworld.com/newslett.../1208web2.html

On Viewpoint, if you loaded and wanted it -OK, if not, it should be removed.

How big is your HD, available free space. How much RAM ?

As you know this appears to be a pretty old PC, running a M$ operating thought to be worst ever (ME)

    Let us know

Sorry - missed your first question - The kids have no idea (no surprise) what may have caused the problem. They play some of the online games which require updating Active X and enabling java, etc. They normally ask before they download anything. I seem to recall though that we did run a program update for Windows. I agree with you that Windows ME is a problem....

    Ciao.

The real estate exchange is a program my husband uses. I tried to uninstall Viewpoint. It says it can be removed from the add/remove area, but it doesn't show up as one of the program remove choices. Not savvy enough to know how to physically remove.

I almost wonder if the Internet Explorer is the problem issue. Is it possible to remove IE and reinstall without causing major problems?

This was an inherited computer and so do not have the system restore disks or original operating system disk. Was thinking of reformatting hard drive and installing a different operating system - is that feasible? Is it worth it? Would that possibly take care of problem? None of the data on the computer is of value, so not worried about it.

You've been a big help and appreciate much your feedback/advice.

Should be able to remove it by going to the "Safe Mode"

    Restart the computer.
As the computer restarts, press and hold down the F8 key until the Windows 98/Me Startup menu appears.
When the Windows 98 (or Me) Startup Menu appears, select Safe Mode and press Enter.

Now go to your C:\PROGRAM FILES

Look for the folder called C:\PROGRAM FILES\VIEWPOINT
    delete that Viewpoint folder.

As far as updating this PC - Hard question to answer. While the PC is old, it is still usable as far as accessing/using the internet. As far as a newer resource sucking games, No it is not. You have a fast enough PC to run XP, RAM is on the thin side, but usable. XP really likes 512. Also since this an "old PC" I would plan on buying a new HD. All HD's will fail, you don't just know when.

So you are looking a $100.00, for XP and another $70-100 for a new HD. This comes to about $200.00. New basic systems can be had for about $300.00

    Hope this helps.

I'll remove from safe mode - thanks. Most likely the hard drive is failing and a replacements and labor (in my mind) justify just purchasing a new system. Thanks again for the advice. I would say this problem would be considered 'Resolved and closed'.
